Kiruna
Kiruna, in northern Sweden in the region of Norrbotten, is the country's northernmost town, home to 18,148 people. Its name comes from the white ptarmigan, called giron by the Sami. It lies on Lake Luossajärvi at the foot of the Kiirunavaara and Luossavaara mountains, known for their iron ore mines. There you will find a wooden church modelled on a Sami tent and a Geophysical Institute studying the northern lights. Kiruna is best visited in winter, when you can admire the snowy landscapes and the aurora borealis.
