San Salvador
San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador, lies in the centre of the country at the foot of the San Salvador volcano, about 35 km from the Pacific coast. The city is home to 316 thousand people, and the whole conurbation to 2.1 million. Despite extensive damage caused by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, important monuments have survived here, such as the metropolitan cathedral and the Palacio Nacional. The climate is tropical, with temperatures from 20 to 30°C. San Salvador is best visited in the dry season, from November to April.
